UPSHIFT is a global program of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which is implemented in over 40 countries. The program provides an opportunity for young people to create socially important projects, receive resources for their implementation, and change their region for the better.

The program does not work with ready-made projects at the entrance, but helps to learn how to develop them step by step. In their applications, teams formulate the problem they want to overcome, and mentors help find an effective solution during training sessions. The trainings are conducted using the Human Centered Design methodology, which helps to involve those for whom these projects are developed in their projects, hear and understand the ultimate beneficiaries and partners. In addition, young people learn to work in a team, think outside the box, and form a community of change agents.

UPSHIFT has been implemented in Ukraine for over 6 years, but we launched it for the first time in the Odessa and Mykolaiv regions in October 2023. Then, in April 2024, we launched this program in the Kherson region.

Among the 13 sets for the program, in particular, we had 8 classic and 2 combined sets for the Southern region (at the same time, not 10 teams entered the wave, as usual, but 20 and 21), as well as one multinational set. Young people from the national communities of the south were involved in the multinational wave - Poles, Bulgarians, Moldovans, Palestinians, Crimean Tatars and Roma.

An important part of the program implementation is the final Post-Upshift event. The main task of the event was to unite upshifters from three regions (Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa) from all waves around one goal, namely, to develop visions of work in 5 areas that concern and concern young people.

Based on the results of the analysis of applications and implemented projects, 5 priority areas were identified: psycho-emotional support, youth spaces, soft skills, career guidance and education. After that, young people conducted additional research-surveys in their areas.

As a result, our upshifters developed 5 unique products:

✅ a career guidance program for youth, containing a methodology for conducting career guidance work that will actually be interesting and useful for young people, taking into account their interests and needs and using a comprehensive approach to modern career guidance forms of work

✅ a psycho-emotional support program with a component of educating parents about the importance of the mental health of family members and a component of additional education for psychologists in educational institutions

✅ a program for the work of youth spaces, taking into account the needs and challenges of young people and the provision of educational, consulting and leisure services

✅ a program for the development of soft skills in youth with an argument for why the state needs it and pilot implementation on the basis of schools with an interactive approach to implementation

✅ a program for the modernization of educational activities and approaches to teaching material by teachers, with an emphasis on the importance of including non-formal education in classical education

This experience is unique for Ukraine. The results of the program implementation can be considered confirmation of the importance and positive impact of UPSHIFT on the youth of the Southern region.
